From the heady and exhilarating ride down the winding Bara Bise to the picturesque views of snow capped mountains and Himalayan rivers, the ride from Kathmandu to Pokhara is indeed memorable. Pokhara serves as the starting point for most of the treks in the Annapurna region, including the very popular Annapurna Circuit. Leaving Pokhara, we head up to the Kali Gandaki Valley to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath (3710m). Muktinath is named after the Muktinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, a Hindu god. Hindus believe that taking a pilgrimage to Muktinath helps one attain ‘moksh’ or salvation. Traversing through rough terrain, we head to ‘apple country’ Jomsom (2770 m.). Home to Thakkalis (an ethnic community known for their hospitality), Jomsom is the capital of Mustang district. In Jomsom you can taste Nepal’s best apple pies while taking in the breathtaking panorama of Dhaulagiri, Neelgiri and Annapurna ranges. With an overnight halt at Pokhara, we make the final leg of the journey and return to Kathmandu.
